Qube Lite Field Tested for Real-World Operations at Tourmaline’s West Wolf Lake Gas Plant

It’s pouring rain and the team’s soaked! Why are they smiling?

We spent a rainy day in August out at Tourmaline’s West Wolf Lake Gas Plant. With the support of the NGIF ETC Program, Qube Technologies is testing our continuous monitoring tech in real-world operational conditions here.

Two Words: Qube Lite

Qube Lite, an intrinsically-safe, lower-cost continuous monitoring device developed by Qube Technologies and currently in testing.

What is Qube Lite?

It's our new intrinsically safe, lower-cost continuous monitoring sensor, designed for near-source deployment. Perfect to monitor emissions from individual equipment (e.g., tanks, separators, wellheads, etc.).

This deployment with the support of NGIF Accelerator Emissions Testing Centre (ETC) Program comes after initial testing at Qube’s own Controlled Release Testing Facility (CRTF), west of Calgary, AB.

Upon activation, the Qube Lite devices immediately began monitoring as evidenced by detection of some small releases from the tanks. Below is an image of Qube’s user-friendly dashboard with Qube Lite deployments indicated by the colored circles.

What It Means for Operators

Get a sharper view of your site’s emissions.

Installing intrinsically safe sensors inside the facility for equipment-level emissions visibility. You’ll get:

  • Faster alerts when an emissions event occurs

  • More precise localization of the source

  • Stronger verification of repairs with clear return-to-baseline data

FAQs

  • Qube is one of many program users benefiting from the NGIF ETC Program.

The NGIF ETC Program, with consortium partners Tourmaline Oil Corp and University of Calgary, provides cleantech companies with free access to testing and commercialization support for rapid scale-up of methane technologies. The Program is funded by the Government of Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Alberta Innovates, Our NRCan | Notre RNCan and Prairies Economic Development Canada I Développement économique Canada pour les Prairies

  • Qube's CRTF is an outdoor emissions testing facility designed to rigorously assess and enhance methane quantification technologies. Qube’s lab-calibrated methane sensors undergo real-world testing to validate their accuracy and improve their understanding of methane plume behavior.

The facility features distinct methane release points and strategically-placed Qube devices, allowing precise simulation of methane plume behavior under real-world conditions, from small leaks to large discharges.

This controlled environment allows Qube to refine sensor placement and optimize system accuracy for different field conditions, ensuring that its CM technology remains at the cutting edge.
